Training and assessment for NSW heavy vehicle licences is conducted by our NSW RMS Accredited Trainer/Assessor (Accred No. 010446) and conducted under the Competency Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) system. Under this system individuals are able to be assessed by a private provider; you do not have to be assessed by the RMS.

What you need to do first

Before you can attend a heavy vehicle driving course/ and assessment, you will need to complete the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) for the licence class and obtain the CBTA booklets at a Motor Registry Office.

Medium Rigid (MR) Course

  • Description: A motor vehicle with 2 axles and a GVM of more than 8 tonnes.
    Any towed trailer must not weigh more than 9 tonnes GVM.
  • Eligibility: Complete driver knowlege test, obtain CBA learner and guide book, have held your P1 or higher licence (not a learner or rider), for a minimum of 12 months.
  • Outcome: Qualify for NSW driver licence class MR. Enquiries & Bookings

Heavy Rigid (HR) Course

  • Description: Any motor vehicle with three axles and more than 8 tonnes GVM.
    Any towed trailer must not weigh more than 9 tonnes GVM.
  • Eligibility: Complete driver knowlege test, obtain CBA learner and guide book, have held your C, LR or MR licence (not a learner or rider), for a minimum of 2 years.
  • Outcome: Qualify for NSW driver licence class HR. Enquiries & Bookings

Heavy Combination (HC) Course

  • Description: Any semi-trailer or rigid vehicle towing a trailer with a GVM of more than 9 tonnes.
  • Eligibility: Complete driver knowlege test, obtain CBA learner and guide book, have held your MR or HR licence for at least one year. P1 and P2 licence holders cannot upgrade to this class.
  • Outcome: Qualify for NSW driver licence class HC. Enquiries & Bookings

Multi Combination (MC) Course

  • Description: Any B-Double or Roadtrain
  • Eligibility: To upgrade to this class you must have held a heavy rigid (HR) or heavy combination (HC) licence for a period totalling at least one year. If upgrading from HR you will need to sucessfully complete the HC component before doing the MC.
    Note: P1 and P2 licence holders cannot upgrade to this class.
  • Outcome: Qualify for NSW driver licence class MC. Enquiries & Bookings

UPGRADING FROM A P2 LICENCE

Provisional P2 holders who also hold Class LR, MR or HR will remain on a provisional licence until until they have held the P2 for a minimum of 2 years and pass a Driver Qualification Test.  There is no variation to this rule and an unrestricted licence will not be issued until the applicant complies with the requirements of the Graduated Licensing Scheme.
